Course Description
This webinar will review the current available diabetes guidelines and provide guidance on pathophysiology, diagnosis, long term risks of uncontrolled diabetes, glycemic management, technology available, and treatment options in different populations of patients with diabetes. The current American Diabetes Association Standards of Care are an annual set of guidelines that use established evidence to provide a reference of care for practitioners.
Participants will review different types of diabetes (T1DM, T2DM, Gestational Diabetes, and MODY) and how risks and treatments can differ between them. The macrovascular (myocardial infarction, stroke, and other ASCVD equivalents) and microvascular (nephropathy, neuropathy and retinopathy) will also be discussed. The program will also examine methods of diagnosing and classifying diabetes control based on glycemic levels and other factors. Attendees will review options available in technology for the assessment and management of diabetes (glucometers vs. continuous glucose monitors). High (DKA and HHS) and low blood sugar management will also be addressed.
Nonpharmacologic management of diabetes, including diet and exercise, will be enumerated.
Drug therapy for diabetes, including biguanides, sulfonylureas, GLP active agents, and SGLT2is will be reviewed. Attendees will also review insulin therapy and insulin pumps, specifically dosing and management with regards to current glycemic state and food.
At the conclusion of the program, the participant should be comfortable identifying patients with diabetes, discussing control, and determining a treatment plan for them.
